Next Act Presents Shakespearean Political Thriller, “Equivocation”

Next Act Theatre will heat things up this winter with something different. EQUIVOCATION by Bill Cain visits William Shakespeare as he wrestles with creation, coercion and the challenges of producing good theatre in the turbulent England of King James the First. It will run February 1 – 25, 2018 at Next Act’s home, 255 South Water Street, in Walker’s Point.

William Shakespeare is commissioned by Sir Robert Cecil, the most powerful man in England, to write the true history of the Gunpowder Plot – a failed attempt to kill King James I. But as “Shag” and his actors rehearse their new play, they suspect the government’s version might be a product of “alternative facts.” Now, the greatest writer of all time must decide between writing a lie and losing his soul, or writing the truth and losing his head.

In conjunction with the run of EQUIVOCATION, Next Act will be hosting a ShakesFest Play Reading Series. THE SEEDS OF BANQUO by Milwaukee artist Angela Iannone follows renowned actor Edwin Booth as he conducts an unforgettable rehearsal of one of Shakespeare’s darkest plays, MACBETH. It will be read Monday, February 12, 2018 at 7:30 pm. THE BOOK OF WILL by Lauren Gunderson will be read Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 7:30 pm. In typical Gunderson style, she has written a fun and fascinating story of how Shakespeare’s best friends saved his plays.
