Next Act Theatre will open the 2017-18 season with the Milwaukee Premiere of
SILENT SKY by Lauren Gunderson, a celestial romance about Henrietta Swan Leavitt and the real women “computers” working at the dawn of modern astronomy. It will run
September 28 – October 22, 2017 at Next Act’s home, 255 South Water Street, in Walker’s Point.
Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s: grave men peer through their giant telescope. Behind the scenes, Henrietta Leavitt and her female “computer” partners map the distant stars in galaxies beyond our own. Fueled by insatiable curiosity, Henrietta’s brilliant work paves the way for ground-breaking discoveries and modern astronomy. But she struggles for recognition in a man’s world. In this magical story of science, history and love, a passionate young woman maps her own passage through a society determined to keep her “in her place.”
“SILENT SKY makes a solid statement in favor of gender equality. Henrietta’s struggle of discovery lasts many years; there is a certain epic quality to her adventure and an enduring sense of accomplishment,” says Producing Artistic Director David Cecsarini.
Opening night is Friday, September 29. Tickets range from $28 – $38 and may be purchased by calling 414-278-0765 or visiting www.nextact.org.
