Voices of the Soul

The Program
Requiem | Herbert Howells
Requiem | Maurice Duruflé
What's Interesting
- Herbert Howells composed his requiem in the early 1930s, but it remained hidden in a desk drawer until 1980, shortly before Howells died. Pieces of the Requiem were used in a larger work, Hymnus Paradisi, which Howells wrote in memory of his son, who died at the age of 9 in 1935.
- Perfectionists will be able to relate to Maurice Duruflé: while he is well-remembered as a composer, he only published 14 pieces of music in his lifetime. He was exacting and meticulous when composing, so it often took him years to complete a single piece of music!
