Milwaukee, WI (October 7, 2019) – True to its mission of nurturing local theatre artists, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre (MCT) presents the Montgomery Davis Play Development Series staged reading of LE/LA, by Liz Shipe on Monday, October 21, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. MCT will host the reading at the Arts@Large Community Center, located at 1100 S. 5th Street, Milwaukee.
The Chevalier – or was it Chevaliere? – d’Éon was many things to those who knew the French diplomat and spy of the late 1700s. In this meditation on identity and gender, those who knew the Chevaliere best remember how the clothes made the man… and the woman.
The reading will be directed by Jennifer Vosters and features Gladys Chmiel, HJ Farr, Josh Krause, Susan Spencer, and Marie Tredway.
Liz Shipe, named one of the city’s most prolific playwrights in 2014 by M – Milwaukee’s Lifestyle Magazine, has penned multiple short and full-length plays, including the recent THE INCREDIBLE ADVENTURE OF ALVIN TATLOCK, which enjoyed multiple productions in Wisconsin and was nominated for a Footlights award for Best Play. Shipe started her career as an actor and branched out to create the Sherlock Holmes-focused BAKER’S STREET TRILOGY that enjoyed successful performances at the Brumder Mansion and Old World Wisconsin.
Her work has been compared to that of Sarah Ruhl with her work UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR: A TALE OF JACK FROST (first with Milwaukee Entertainment Group and later Soulstice Theatre) and Duffy Adams for her pirate-themed spectacle BONNY ANNE BONNY (with Theatre RED). BONNY ANNE BONNY was also given honorable mention as one of the best plays of 2016 by both the Journal Sentinel and OnMilwaukee.
Tickets for the reading of LE/LA will be pay-what-you-choose at the door. Seating is first-come, first-serve. The Arts@Large Café will be open for refreshments before the reading. Cash bar will be available.
MCT proudly showcases two Wisconsin playwrights every season through the Montgomery Davis Play Development Series. Twice a year, chosen writers are invited to workshop new plays in development with a cast and director before presenting their work as a staged reading, giving Milwaukee residents the opportunity to be among the first to hear original stories from regional artists.
The Montgomery Davis Play Development Series is sponsored by David A. Paris and Marsha R. Sehler. For more information about the staged reading, contact Milwaukee Chamber Theatre at 414.276.8842 or visit milwaukeechambertheatre.com.
