Bel Canto Chorus Expands Senior Singers Program to Mequon, Rebecca Renee Winnie Named New Director

Former Homestead High School choir director shares joy of

singing with Ozaukee seniors

MILWAUKEE, WI (September 14, 2017) – Bel Canto Chorus names Rebecca Renee Winnie as its new Mequon Senior Singers director. Winnie, who served as the choir director at Homestead High School in Mequon since 1988, will officially start her new position on September 18.

The Bel Canto Senior Singers Program was created in 2006 to bring the increasingly documented physical, mental, emotional, and social benefits of participatory choral singing to senior citizens in the community age 55 and better. Operating out of and serving seniors in New Berlin and the San Camillo Retirement Community in Milwaukee, Bel Canto Chorus added another Senior Singers group in Mequon to support the desire for senior programs in the Ozaukee area. The newest group will rehearse and perform at the Mequon United Methodist Church under the direction of Winnie.

“I believe that everyone can and should sing. I look forward to sharing the joy of singing and making music with the new Bel Canto Mequon Senior Singers!” said Winnie.
Since retiring as the choir director at Homestead High School, Winnie joined the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music faculty. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in Choral and Instrumental Music Education and completed her Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting at the same institution. Winnie has been awarded the Civic Music Association of Milwaukee Certificate of Excellence in Choral Music Instruction, the Mequon–Thiensville Outstanding Educator Award, and the Herb Kohl Fellowship Award.

Participants in Senior Singers attend weekly rehearsals throughout fall and spring semesters. Each of these semesters culminates in a concert that is free and open to the public. Winnie, and the newest group of Senior Singers, will perform on Sunday, November 19 at 3pm at the Mequon United Methodist Church.

“I believe it is my mission to share the power, discipline, and joy of musical expression. In performing ensembles, powerful musical moments are experienced together as a community,” Winnie said. “There is a unique synergistic strength in an ensemble—one where we become greater together.”
