An Irish Tale of Love and Land Opens 29th Season at Next Act

Milwaukee, WI – Next Act Theatre will open the 2018-19 season with OUTSIDE MULLINGAR by John Patrick Shanley, author of DOUBT: A PARABLE. Inspired by the playwright’s Irish roots, this story follows two middle-aged farmers struggling with their parents, the land and a secret yearning for each other. It will run September 27 – October 21, 2018 at Next Act’s home, 255 South Water Street, in Walker’s Point.

Deep within Irish turf county, Anthony is an introverted farmer and Rosemary, next door, is the woman who secretly vows to have him at all costs. They are nearing their middle years and uneasy with what the future might hold. When Anthony’s crusty father threatens to disinherit him, Rosemary steps into the middle of a land feud and family eccentricities to prevent disaster. Only an Irish heroine as strong and down-to-earth as Rosemary could hope to secure the land, and her love.

“In OUTSIDE MULLINGER, John Patrick Shanley expresses a deep and loving connection to his Irish roots. He writes with an authentic voice; his story and characters emerge whole, rustic, mischievous and beautiful, straight out of the damp Irish countryside. This is not your garden-variety romance,” says Producing Artistic Director David Cecsarini.

Opening night is Friday, September 28. Tickets range from $30 – $40 and go on sale Monday, August 6, at noon.

Longtime Next Act collaborator Edward Morgan will direct the production. The cast will feature four well-known Milwaukee veterans: Carrie Hitchcock as Aoife Muldoon [SILENT SKY, BLOOMSDAY, HERESY], James Pickering as Tony Reilly [THE SECRET MASK, THREE VIEWS OF THE SAME OBJECT, THE EXONERATED], Deborah Stables as Rosemary Muldoon [SILENT SKY, THE OTHER PLACE, MOTHERHOOD OUT LOUD], and Next Act Producing Artistic Director David Cecsarini as Anthony Reilly [EQUIVOCATION, UnSILENT NIGHT, BRAVO, CARUSO!].
