This intimate story is quintessential Next Act material; showing the beauty and complexity of enduring relationships through the familiar lens of family. A SMALL FIRE will run January 30 – February 23, 2020 at Next Act’s home, 255 South Water Street, in Walker’s Point. Opening night is Friday, January 31, 2020. Tickets range from $30 – $40, plus fees, and may be purchased by calling 414-278-0765 or visiting nextact.org.
At the height of her powers as a construction company CEO, Emily Bridges falls victim to a mysterious disease which slowly strips away her senses. As she loses smell, taste, sight, and finally, hearing, this fiercely independent woman must now rely completely upon her husband John, whose devotion she has always taken for granted. that devotion now faces the ultimate test as perhaps the one thing strong enough to restore Emily’s will to live, and to love.
“This is a gentle, but fierce, depiction of what love and redemption can look like. It’s also a stirring reminder that life – its events, mysteries, surprises – can be unreliable. Adam Bock’s play urges us to embrace life in the here and now, and it also advocates for love as the conduit through which life is embraced. Bock’s voice is quiet, and yet, so powerful,” says Producing Artistic Director David Cecsarini, who will direct the production.
The cast will feature Mary MacDonald Kerr as Emily Bridges (TEN QUESTIONS…, IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, SYLVIA), Jonathan Smoots as John Bridges (EQUIVOCATION, RACE, FAITH HEALER), Emily Vitrano as Jenny Bridges (LOMBARDI: THE ONLY THING) and Mark Corkins as Billy Fontaine, making his Next Act debut.
The production team will include Scenic Designer Rick Rasmussen (LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR, THE TWELVE DATES OF CHRISTMAS, OUTSIDE MULLINGAR), Lighting Designer Aaron Sherkow (OUTSIDE MULLINGAR, THE SECRET MASK, SILENT SKY), Costume Designer Dana Brzesinski (OUTSIDE MULLINGAR, THE SECRET MASK, UnSILENT NIGHT), resident Properties Master Heidi Salter, resident Sound Designer and Next Act Producing Artistic Director David Cecsarini and resident Production Stage Manager Jessica Connelly.
